When the opportunity arises for something completely new to be designed and constructed, an architect’s clients often ask for elements of historical properties to be included in their home’s design.
A custom-home builder will often do the same: Incorporate classical elements into beautiful new designs that both honour the past and celebrate the present with technology and materials.
So it was with a home recently constructed in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Designed by architectural firm Mark P. Finlay Architects, AIA and constructed by custom-home builder Davenport Contracting Inc., the “New Edwardian” residence featured a gorgeous limestone facade and a design recalling the Edwardian-style mansions of yesteryear.
Tradewood Industries was asked to participate in the Greenwich, CT project, supplying euro-casement windows and doors in classical styles.
The finely designed outswing casement windows use European multi-locking hardware with a distinctive handle affixed to the sash, and a custom-fabricated Tradewood casement stay at the bottom. It’s a traditional design, but new technology in the way the window works allows it to enhance any new build and blend seamlessly into any historical renovation.
Euro-casement windows are available with a roll screen or hinged wood screen, and are also available in a French design, in which the centre mullion post is omitted. The windows are so versatile, they can be custom manufactured in any size, with or without transoms. They are also available with other configurations, such as with bent glass.
Looking at this Greenwich home, with its crisp limestone facade and elegant outswing casement windows, you might think it has been standing for a century. It’s as though a classical design married new technology, and the result is stunning.
There is merit in traditional designs, which bring the past alive for the enjoyment of new generations of homeowners.
Tradewood Industries is happy to be part of such a project.
